PAS Pushing for ‘Hardline Islamic Laws’: Beware When the Tiger Unsheath its Hidden Claws

I am not surprised when PAS starts pushing for ‘hardline Islamic laws’; it’s only a matter of time. But PAS making its move so soon?- and it is just 3 months since the last election. Perhaps hubris of unexpected victory has overtaken PAS’ shrewed strategic schemes that so far manage to hide its covert agenda for the Islamic state (which was euphemistically described as the ‘welfare state’ in its election manifesto). Let’s take seriously the warning, “He who dines with PAS must use a very long spoon”

PAS Youth moots Islamic law in Pakatan states

PAS Youth is keen on implementing hardline Islamic laws that ban gambling, limiting sale of liquor and introducing dress code for office workers in all Pakatan-ruled states.

In taking the first step towards introducing such laws, PAS Youth will organise a seminar in August to discuss the possibility of doing so.

The movement’s deputy chief Azman Shapawi Abdul Rani said that committees to study the proposal would be established in Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor.

“We are aware that it is not going to be easy in states like Penang and Perak where PAS is a minority but we will push for it,” said Azman, according to Bernama.

Azman said that the proposed laws would not negatively affect non-Muslims despite the proposals directly touching on gambling, liquor and dress codes.

DAP open in Penang
He also claimed that the proposed laws would not affect the “good relations” between PAS and other Pakatan coalition parties. Azman said DAP would object to the youth wing’s proposals but believed there was room to implement the proposed laws as not all leaders in DAP have the same position.

“If we look at the DAP leadership in Penang, they are very open and tolerant. They also raise the allowances of religious teachers,” he said.

Azman also issued a cryptic warning that Pakatan coalition parties cannot stand on their own. “PAS cannot move on its own, neither can DAP nor PKR in Selangor. All of us have to support each other,” he added.

Pas to push for Islamic lifestyle

2008/06/15
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Sunday/National/2268136/Article/index_html
KOTA BARU: Pas is pursuing its plan to introduce the Islamic lifestyle both in the states it controls and those run by its political partners, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and DAP.

Using Kelantan as the example of a state which practises the Islamic way of life, the party is proposing to hold a series of seminars in Kuala Lumpur by August to discuss its plan.

Pas Youth vice-chief Azman Shapawi Abdul Rani said yesterday the party wanted to carry out the implementation of siasah syariah (syariah lifestyle) as it had promised to do during the general election.

He said the movement had been directed to find a workable solution.

However, Azman admitted the party’s limitation in carrying out widespread change as it only had full control over Kelantan and Kedah while Selangor, Penang and Perak were being held with their partners, PKR and DAP, under the Pakatan Rakyat banner.

“We will use Kelantan as the guide as it had introduced changes such as banning gambling, limiting the sale and public display of alcohol and separate checking counters for men and women in supermarkets.

“However, we know that what is being done in Kelantan maybe cannot be done in other states as we are not the ruling party there.

“We will invite our political partners for a discussion, maybe invite the menteris besar and the chief minister too,” he said after opening the Kelantan Pas Youth annual meeting here yesterday.

“We will study the state laws and see where we can introduce the Islamic laws.

“We will consider whether that society has a Muslim majority or not.”

Asked if the DAP, in particular its party stalwarts, would accept the proposals, he said the move to implement Islamic rule would not affect the non-Muslims.

“DAP is not just Karpal Singh or Lim Kit Siang. They have other leaders who are positive and open-minded like the Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who recently raised the allowance for religious teachers.

“We will do this according to the state laws and after discussions with our partners.”

Update 2 from Reuters:

Malaysia Islamist Party Pushes for Sharia Penalties
Sun Jun 15, 2008 2:43pm IST
http://in.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idINIndia-34070220080615

By Niluksi Koswanage

KAMPUNG PULAU MELAKA, Malaysia (Reuters) – A leader of Malaysia’s Islamist party, which made surprising gains in March elections, wants its secular allies to apply strict sharia law, which include amputations and stonings for Muslims.

The hardline Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) has enacted such laws in its Kelantan stronghold to punish rapists and adulterers with stoning to death, while thieves would lose their limbs.

However, the country’s Federal government has barred PAS from enforcing the laws.

PAS and other opposition parties wrested control of five of Malaysia’s 13 states in the March election as voters punished the ruling coalition for concerns ranging from rising crime to racial tensions.

But analysts have said it would be tough for PAS to broaden its appeal due to its advocacy of the punishments called for by strict Muslim religious law, known as sharia or hudud, which scare off non-Muslims who see the party as a fundamentalist clique.

“Islam is a moderate, soft religion,” PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat told Reuters late last week in the northeastern state of Kelantan, the party’s stronghold for the past 18 years.

“We took small steps to introduce Islam as a way of life in Kelantan. We would like to do the same in the other states that have fallen to the opposition.”

Half of Malaysia’s 26 million people are ethnic Malays, who by definition are Muslims. Ethnic Chinese and Indians, the largest two minority groups, are either Hindus, Buddhists or Christians.

Hudud laws, which relate to many aspects of behaviour, would not apply to non-Muslims.

Nik Aziz, also chief minister of Kelantan, said he had asked leaders of the opposition-held states to come together to discuss implementing hudud law.

“But we don’t want to force or pressurise people, we want to discuss. We can surely come to a compromise,” he said.

The use of hudud punishments has long been a stumbling block in PAS’s bid to form a formal pact with other main opposition parties, which include a mainly ethnic Chinese party and a multiracial secular one.

Other opposition leaders say an Islamic platform would not hold appeal in this modern, multi-ethnic country.

“We compliment PAS for being willing to consult,” Tian Chua, spokesman of the opposition People’s Justice Party, said in response to Nik Aziz’s invitation to discussion.

“But our position, as it stands, is actually clear. We will not recommend any implementation of hudud.”

The opposition pulled off its biggest win ever during the recent election, depriving the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition of its two-thirds parliamentary majority and gaining control of five states.

I AM SO ANGRY; I CAN ONLY UTTER THAT PAS IS INDEED “EVIL TWO-FACE SEXIST, SADIST, NAZI BASTARDS!” I AM SO SICK OF THESE BARBARIC TALIBAN/AL-QAEDA ****** WHO ARE IMPOSING PRIMITIVE SO-CALLED LAWS BY THE SWORD! HOW DARE THEY & SO SHAMEFUL THAT RELIGION WHICH IS ABOUT KINDNESS AND JUSTICE, HAS COME TO THIS! GO AND LIVE IN THE CAVE LIKE OSAMA AND HIS TALIBAN GANGS; WHILST USING THE WOMEN ONLY FOR SEX-SLAVES AFTER COVERING THEM LIKE GOATS! DON’T USE ALL THE MODERN AND WESTERN TECHNOLOGY SINCE YOU HATE IT SO MUCH, PAS IDIOTS! ONE LAST THING, MANY MUSLIMS AND MALAYS LOVE MODERNITY AND WESTERN STUFFS; WE WILL FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL FOR IT! AND WE HOPE DAP & PKR WON’T BETRAY US!

    Noor Aza Othman,
    Liberal/Feminist Malay Woman!

  2. blond Says:

Should not worry bout it. nON Muslim at kelantan weren’t been hurt or treated bad when PAS ban gambling, limiting sale of liquor and introducing dress code for office workers. People just scare with something u havent face and just heard all the prorogation from source which hate Islam. What the Islam ban, almost all the religious ban in they practices.

  3. JOHN CHEN Says:

This is a new world. Nothing and nobody can stop the advancement of technology in this new era. If anyone try to use any means, like religions, the end of the world scenario or predicted fortune and bad luck to frighten the people into going against the modernization, then he must have his own agenda or with evil intention

  4. shaz Says:

i was angered by what Noor Aza Othman said about Shariah law. What kind of Muslim saying Islamic law as barbaric and primitive? Can you give any reason for that? Just because the law is different from Western one, you cannot say it as primitive! If you study history, many communities in the world have their own distinctive criminal laws, before Common Law reaches them. And you could not claim Common Law(British) or Civil Law(US) as the best law ever exist in human civilization.

Why it is ‘so shameful’ to enact the true teaching of Islam?
Im not in favor of PAS, but I respect Islam Law, as every Muslim should have, or to be specific, the real Muslim should have. You are scared of what you dont really know!!

  5. Loktarasmish Says:

Why worry. Those laws applicable only to moslems. Non-moslems need not worry. BTW, Usage of capitalized letters is rude and barbaric. So much of your “Liberal/Feminist Malay Woman”. If liberal than you should be open. Ask those non-moslem in Kelantan, were they ill-treated?

  6. jiji Says:

As it is a Bernama report, I am inclined to believe that it is the UMNO/BN mischievously twisting what PAS youth leaders said, and Malaysiakini falling into Bernama’s trap to pick up the story.

However if the report is true, PAS would certainly get a ton of bricks from the other PR components. Top PAS leaders in the professional group would have to dissociate themselves from the youth’s remarks since these would undo all that the top professional leadership worked so hard to phase out Islamic state.

If there are hotheads in PAS youth, they should remember that PR states would NEVER accept Islamic laws, period. It is because of the Islamic state and Islamic laws that PAS did so badly in 2004 GE and they should have learnt their lesson. But it seems some people in PAS youth never learn and they want to play with fire AGAIN. Let them and let them be burnt.

  7. anak perelih Says:

If you read carefully.. it’s not to implement the islamic law.. but more about regulations and law inline with Islamic teaching and other religions as well as moral… limiting the gambling outlets, liquor sales to muslims… If it is islamic law.. there will be a mention about hudud and takzir as well as amending the state constitutions… and not all of the 5 pakatan states has a 2/3 majority to amend it… and some of the issues raised might inline with DAP’s.. like how the gambling outlets affected the community…

    to Nor Aza Othman…
As a muslim… you should know that Islamic law is not “primitive law by the sword”.. and PAS is not “barbaric taliban alqaeda”.. It looks like you are influenced by tghe US propaganda… even Americans don’t believe like that. remember ferenheight 9/11.. or at least.. watch that “Harold and Kumar escaped from Guantanamo”…
BTW… what’s your stand of women exploitation as sex object to sell things… and that’s the work of the “liberals” like you…. just have yourself a copy of Penthouse or Playboy magazine… you’re suppose to fight that kind of female exploitation….!!! IDIOT!!!

That’s the real “making women as sex slave”… and they are from the west… so your logic flawed…. why should PAS not to “USE ALL THE MODERN AND WESTERN TECHNOLOGY”??? no connection at all… what a stupid argument by a stupid person…!!!

If Islam is A religion which is “kindness and justice” as you claimed… it must comes with its law and teachings to implement it kindness and justice…. but you seems to oppose the islamic law…. this only proves that you is a very confused person…

  8. Noor Aza Othman Says:

Blond, first to you – Many Kelantanese just ran away from Kelantan to escape such barbarity! And I’ve met many who said they don’t feel belong there? So tell me; what kind of religion that has to make people feel that way?! ONE CANNOT FORCE RELIGION BY THE “SWORD” , FOR THERE WILL BE NO LOVE FOR THE RELIGION; JUST HATRED!

NOW LOKTARASMISH, USING CAPITAL LETTERS ARE BARBARIC COMPARED TO ALL THE VIOLENCE & INJUSTICE JUSTIFIED UNDER ISLAM IS IT? YOU DEFINITELY BELONG IN THE CAVE LIKE POOR OSAMA THERE!

Now, lastly to you, Shaz; there shouldn’t be laws in religion in the first place; and it shouldn’t be upheld by using violence and the sword! Here, read this up intelligently, on how the primitive laws are used to commit barbarity and violence towards other Muslim women and men; before you try to be so defensive and ignorant; typical of many sexist and sadist Muslims. And such examples are just a few among many more! Especially, on “honour killings” committed and silently sanctioned by Islamic laws since there have been no condemnation until now of it! Believe me, soon all the Taliban/al-Qaeda mullahs here would want the same barbaric practise in Malaysia, as common now in Pakistan and Bangladesh and the Middle East. Since they’re already demanding death for converts from iIslam recently in Penang protest!

    At – http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/a-question-of-honour-police-say-17000-women-are-victims-every-year-780522.html
Up to 17,000 women in Britain are being subjected to “honour” related violence, including murder, every year, according to police chiefs.
And official figures on forced marriages are the tip of the iceberg, says the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).
It warns that the number of girls falling victim to forced marriages, kidnappings, sexual assaults, beatings and even murder by relatives intent on upholding the “honour” of their family is up to 35 times higher than official figures suggest.
The crisis, with children as young as 11 having been sent abroad to be married, has prompted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to call on British consular staff in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan to take more action to identify and help British citizens believed to be the victims of forced marriages in recent years.

    At – http://www.village.ie/World/Middle_East/Death_by_stoning_continues_in_Iran/
A report published today by Amnesty International says that a moratorium in Iran on the sentence to death by stoning is not being upheld. One person was stoned to death in 2007, two people in 2006, and a further 11 people are at risk of being stoned to death….AI further criticises Iran’s justice system which “commonly results in unfair trials, including capital cases”. In particular, it says that women “are not treated equally before the law and courts, in clear violation of international fair trial standards. They are particularly vulnerable to unfair trials because they are more likely than men to be illiterate and therefore more likely to sign confessions to crimes they did not commit”. Nine of the 11 people at risk of being stoned to death are women….

  9. Noor Aza Othman Says:

    Anak Perelih,

At least those women in the Playboy have choices and freedom to do what they want; instead of being forced to cover up like goats, stupid!
And, yes, all these Taliban/Al-Qaeda Mullahs hate the westerners/ modernity so much that include freedom and equality for women; but yet they want all the westerners/modern technology! So that’s what my argument is about, YOU IDIOT!
SO, I SUGGEST TALIBAN/AL-QAEDA MULLAHS LIKE YOU GO AND LIVE IN THE CAVE LIKE OSAMA AND HIS TALIBAN GOATS THERE! BUT I CAN BET THEY MIGHT BE READING UP ON THE PLAYBOY JUST LIKE THOSE BASTARD BOMBERS WHO BLEW UP INNOCENT PEOPLE IN 9/11 BESIDES SPENDING THEIR LAST NIGHTS WITH PROSTITUTES; AND THEY HOPE TO GO TO HEAVEN?!

  11. Annoyed Says:

I am a Muslim myself and while I respect the teachings of Islam, I do understand the anger that Noor Aza Othman is feeling although she might come across as rather strong and too angry.

But put aside her rage. Understand the essence of her feelings if you want to know where she is coming from. It seems to me that she feels that what PAS Youth is proposing is an assault on personal freedom and while it may come as a shock to many PAS-minded Muslims, there are many, MANY, Muslims who are also very resentful of the oppression, repression and fear that their brand of control represents.

So while the non-Muslims are so keen on assuring each other that these repressive moves will not affect them, they should realise that most Muslims do not want to live under the rule of oppression. They want the true spirit of the religion which is meant to invoke goodwill, not fear. Don’t just think of yourself; think of those who will suffer if such ruling comes into force.

Also, it is very insulting to be spied on and have one’s privacy out of one’s control and in the hands of others who think they have the right to decide how we should dress, live etc etc. One’s home is supposed to be one’s castle, but there are parties who have the right to burst into your home without permission.

You can say what you want, but to subject people to this kind of moral policing is insulting and primitive and uncivilized.

Besides, what I personally find most irritating is the constant harping on the issue of women’s dressing when there are so many more urgent issues to deal with. Helping women who have been abandoned by errant husbands who don’t pay a single sen for the upkeep of the children they carelessly created is one such issue. For all those hardliners who are also so hung up on the way women dress, go and find out how these poor women suffer. They desperately need help from people in power but what is being done to help them??

The sad thing is that everytime concerned parties come out in support of Muslim women, there are vengeful, spiteful characters who attack them in the most vitriolic ways.

  12. Laksmana Says:

    Azra
You are being used by the western group and inteligence to condem Islam. They have brainwashed you.And now it is easy for them to go on “cyber” war on Islam,by using a “trojan horse “like you.The crusade on Islam is contuinous and ongoing process, since the crusade war between King Richard and Salahudin Al Ayubi.

  13. Middle Path Says:

I agree with Noor and Jiji, PAS is so arrogant like Umnoputras now. The next election we rakyat will vote them out, so simple as that! We RAKYAT still the BOSS!!.

  14. Noor Aza Othman Says:

Annoyed; brilliant comment! Buy yes, I’m very angry because of the increasing injustice I see being done under religion/Islam!

And to Laksmana, there you go again! Anyone who condemns fanatical islam and fanatical Muslims must be brainwashed hem! Well, I love modernity and some western stuffs; so what! I’m not a hypocrite, and I wonder whether you’re using computers, tv, videos, and so on? If you hate the western/modern civilization so much, go and live in the cave like Osama there! Pathetic, I’m the “trojan horse”? Well, if I need to be a “Trojan Horse”(for justice sake mind you) amongst Taliban/Al-Qaeda bastards who want to poison our young minds in Malaysia here, I will! I was a long time activist in the Irish anti-War Movement; where many are wonderful westerners who are defending the Muslims’ rights and against the Iraq War. So would you say that their compassion and kind spirit are of no relevance to you just because they’re non-Muslims? All human beings are equal; and I will not tolerate violence and injustice done under the name of any religion including Islam!

    Noor Aza Othman.

I am using computer,tv ,internet dan some western staff ,and what is the problem with your mind? Then you asked me to live in the cave like osama for what? That guy live in the cave because thay are in war with Uncle Sam Bastard. It is a tactical war strategy. It is a duty for a muslim to defend their country againts foreign occupation and their puppet goverment.

  18. Annoyed Says:

Laksmana, you are completely entitled to your views, but that does not give you, or anyone else, the right to make such arrogant and baseless accusations against those who hold a different viewpoint.

Are you so one-dimensional that the only thing that comes to your mind is to accuse others of being “trojan” horses?? But since you are so hung up on the topic, what are you then, by the way? Aren’t you parroting the excessive and fanatical rantings of those whose primary objective in life seems to be a Taliban style existence?? Who is the trojan horse here?? Not so nice when you have to look in the mirror, is it?

If living like the Taliban is what you desire for yourself and your family, then do just that, but don’t imagine for a moment that you can demand the same of others. This is not the middle ages and these are not feudal times. If you think the people are going to sibmit to extremism like timid cows, you had better look back at recent history in Malaysia. Why did PAS lose so badly in an earlier election? They trumpeted their Islamic State target with no thought for the masses. Well it was the silent majority who voted them out of power in Trengganu and almost succeeded in voting them out of power in Kelantan too. And that silent majority were largely Muslims. And it can happen again. So get real.

    For dummies:

-Nurin Jazlin Jazimin was err.. sth to do with cucumber & brinjal
    -Sharlinie remains missing
-Lelaki Kucing is still at large
    -Our crime rate is increasing

while we are running on whatever undefined law inherited from the British invaders, despite the fact that the British does not consist of even 1% of Malaysian population.

Questions like ‘will it work’ may arise, but let’s not forget that whatever law that we have is simply not working. Surely foreign investors will not stop Lelaki Kucing or Mat Rempit.

  20. Jeremiah Says:

For the PAS youth leader to proclaim and presume that all Muslims subscribe to hudud laws is similar to the situation where, for instance, the Catholics in Malaysia were to make it a law that all Christians, including Prostestants like myself, wear the cross. While I am sure any power-wielding Catholic party is not so foolish as to do such a thing, I am using this as an example to show the tremendous problems of making religious values into laws for everyone. (Another example would be for an elected Christian sect leader to make it a law that all Christians can only worship on Saturdays).

Based on the latest controversy of PAS revealing its true colours, I think the best strategy is to counter a religious premise (hudud laws) with another religious premise (the freedom of every God-created person to love and worship God is a freedom that God grants out of a true, genuine love reminiscent of a father’s unconditional love for his children).

Here is the deep deception which religious fanatics are trying to deceive all faithful Malaysian citizens: that the acceptance of secular law is an acceptance of godless laws, i.e a system of justice without god in the centre of judgement. This is false and against the spirit if not the letter of the constitution. We have to obey traffic laws and laws of commerce but if, you as a member of your religious fraternity, wish to conduct business according to your Syariah principles, well and good. Nobody is stopping you until and unless you impose your principles and laws on other people (who may be even more spiritual than you.)

In conclusion, leaders in the DAP and Keadilan have to intelligently engage PAS in this crucial debate. And all Malaysians have to deal with the root of this issue, which is not so much about secular laws versus religious laws.

Don’t let PAS frame the debate. The actual debate is essentially this: Should religious practices be imposed on people who do not share the same religious interpretations? If the answer is a resounding No!, then the next question is: Can the practice of religion (and the love of God) be the free will of its practitioners or is it best to enforce it through punishment and penalties? The answer to this question will resolve the issue of whether Malaysia or any of the five states in which PR rules is an Islamic state, a Christian state or a secular state.

The only practical solution, as I see it for this country, is for a secular state and its basic laws to overide the draconian laws of any religious group. Even if 9 out 10 Muslims want to have hudud laws legislated in any state, the basic human rights of that minority single Muslim citizen should be protected by the law.
